Astro vs WordPress: Which is Better for Your Website?

When you need a website, it’s easy to choose what you already know. For more than ten years, that’s often been WordPress. Most people have heard of it, and many have tried it. I did the same when I started building sites. I used WordPress because it was familiar. But sometimes, sticking with what you know isn’t the best choice, especially if you care about performance.
What if you use a complex, database-heavy platform for a simple website? You might end up with a slow site that needs a lot of upkeep. Using WordPress for a small, five-page business site can be too much. It works, but it’s often slow, bloated, and not the best fit.
There’s a much better option out there: Astro.
What makes Astro different?
Astro is a modern web framework that launched in 2022. It quickly became popular with developers who care about website speed.
Instead of assembling a page every single time someone clicks a link, Astro handles all the heavy lifting upfront. It removes unnecessary code and delivers pure, lightning-fast pages.
A while back, I rebuilt a client website using Astro. The original version of the WordPress site relied on a bloated theme and a dozen random plugins. Despite the website being fairly basic, it took a few seconds to load. I rebuilt the core pages using Astro, and the load time dropped to a few milliseconds. It was a big improvement, and the client was very happy.
Another great thing about Astro is that it works with all the popular frontend frameworks right out of the box. Whether you use React, Svelte, or Vue, you can use your favourite tools and still keep your site fast.
Speed matters.
No one likes waiting for a page to load, even if there’s a nice animation. If your site is slow, visitors will leave. It’s as simple as that.
Astro doesn’t include any JavaScript by default. That means there are no extra scripts slowing things down and no cluttered code getting in the way. (Schott & Moore, 2021) Visitors see the clean text and images they came for.
Does this mean you can’t update your own content? Not at all. You can connect Astro to a simple content management system, such as Netlify CMS or Sanity. For example, once your site is set up, you can log in to an easy-to-use interface, make changes to text or images, and click save, your site will update automatically. This gives you a smooth editing experience without the slow, heavy frontend.
Hidden costs and security risks
Traditional platforms need regular maintenance. Plugins can break, themes can become outdated, and security issues can appear while you’re busy running your business.
It gets worse. A functional WordPress site can rely on expensive premium plugins for basic features like caching, forms, and SEO. Those yearly subscriptions add up fast. To cut corners, some development studios will use “cracked” or “nulled” versions of these premium tools. This is a serious security risk. Nulled plugins are notorious for containing malicious code that can compromise the security of your business and its customers.
Astro sites work differently. They’re mostly static, so there’s no live database for hackers to target. We build your site, you host it, and it just works. You can relax knowing your website is safer. And if you ever need help after your site goes live, we offer ongoing support for updates, troubleshooting or adding new features. That way, you can feel confident that your website will keep running smoothly over time.
Greener and leaner
Because Astro sites are so light, they require far less server power to run. You aren’t firing up a database and processing PHP every single time someone visits your homepage. This can mean cheaper hosting bills for you. Plus it also means a significantly smaller carbon footprint. A win for everyone!
Is Astro a good fit for you?
If you run a massive online store with thousands of daily transactions, you probably need a heavier setup. But what if you need a professional business site, a stunning portfolio, or a quick-loading blog? Astro is a strong option here. It supports most of the features business owners expect, including contact forms, booking requests, galleries, and even simple e-commerce or payment integrations. Features like analytics, blogs, SEO optimisation, newsletters, and connection to external tools are all possible in Astro too! This makes it a flexible choice for most small to medium business needs.
Astro lets your business stand out without getting in the way. Ready to let go of the extra clutter? Let’s chat about building a fast, clean website that fits your goals at Zenso Digital.
